Chelsea are currently in fifth place in the league table and are so far a resurgent force under Thomas Tuchel. The Blues are also competing on the European front and have the rare opportunity to win two trophies this season. They defeated Crystal Palace in their last premier league encounter and will be confident in their new found resilience to be able to find a way past Pep Guardiola’s men. Their midweek game against Porto ended in defeat but they had already done the job in the first leg and went through on aggregate. Tuchel has instilled new found discipline in the side and they look a real force to contend with this season especially on the defensive end. The issue of a lack of fire power continues and Tuchel will be hoping he can find the right formula in what is an immensely crucial tie.
Manchester City have been in immaculate form in 2021 with Pep Guardiola’s men winning again in midweek to advance to the champions league semi finals where they will face PSG. Despite a 2-1 defeat to Leeds United in the premier league last weekend the citizens still hold an 11 point lead at the top of the premier league table. The form of key players has picked up as well and injured players have recovered and have started to contribute so Pep has a full squad to choose from. It will be interesting to see if Raheem Sterling returns to the side after being dropped for the Dortmund game in midweek but whatever side the manager puts out you can be sure of coming up against world class footballers all over the pitch. Manchester City are attempting to win an unprecedented 4 trophies so expect them to come out guns blazing in a bid to get to the FA Cup final.
Mateo Kovacic has been sidelined by a hamstring injury suffered during training on Monday, and Andreas Christensen is pushing veteran Thiago Silva for a place in the heart of the defense. After just recently recovering from his own fitness problems, N'Golo Kante was brought in to replace Kovacic, and Tuchel is hopeful that the Frenchman will be fit enough to play on Saturday, so also Kovacic.
Only Sergio Aguero, a club legend, appears to be a doubt for City due to a light muscle injury that held him out of the team that faced Dortmund, with Raheem Sterling and Gabriel Jesus vying for starting spots. Aymeric Laporte is expected to return to the starting lineup, while Joao Cancelo is expected to return to the bench.
Predicted Chelsea XI: Arrizabalaga; Rudiger, Silva, Azpilicueta; Alonso, James, Kante, Jorginho; Mount, Pulisic, Havertz
Predicted Man City XI: Steffen; Cancelo, Stones, Dias, Walker; Rodri, Gundogan, De Bruyne; Torres, Sterling, Jesus
Manchester City has outperformed expectations this season, and their latest results support Pep Guardiola's tactics. The Cityzens, on the other hand, have had their fair share of problems in knockout matches and will have to be careful of their opponents this weekend. Their opponents are real contenders, and Thomas Tuchel will be looking to make a point against the best team in the Premier League on Saturday.
